Clinically trialled strains
Lactiplantibacillus plantarum
299v (DSM 9843)
One of the most thoroughly researched probiotic strains in the world, studied in the context of everyday digestive comfort — including bloating and abdominal discomfort — and separately in the context of how efficiently the body takes up iron from food.
Studied in the context of
How it works
Unlike most probiotics, which simply pass through, this strain attaches to the lining of the large intestine. It supports the gut's own protective mucus layer and produces short-chain fatty acids — the compounds cells lining the colon use as fuel. Its effect on iron is separate: it acts on the conversion step in the small intestine that makes iron from food absorbable.
The digestive and iron research are separate bodies of work, at different dose schedules — iron is studied taken with an iron-containing meal.
Evidence
Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 214 adults over four weeks, with separate cross-over studies and a meta-analysis on iron absorption.
