During pregnancy, the body’s requirements for important vitamins and minerals increase. To ensure these needs are met, the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) recommends that pregnant women supplement their diet with the following vitamins and minerals (1)
Folic acid
Supplementation with at least 400mcg folic acid per day is recommended for one month prior to conception, and during the first trimester of pregnancy, to reduce the risk of neural tube defects. Biome Prenatal+ Probiotic contains 500mcg folic acid per capsule.
Iodine
Supplementation with 150mcg of iodine per day is recommended for women who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, to ensure healthy brain development.
Vitamin D
RANZCOG recommend that women without a vitamin D deficiency should take 400IU of vitamin D3 daily.
Benefits of probiotics during pregnancy
Supplementing your diet with a daily probiotic has been shown to significantly reduce blood sugar and insulin levels, and improve insulin sensitivity, compared to a placebo (2).
